Romanian firefighters in Greece are assisting on Wednesday with extinguishing a fire in an industrial area near Athens.
"The Romanian unit was called to intervene to put out a fire that broke out in the Keratea area, located southeast of Athens. The fire is affecting an industrial zone with numerous warehouses and is fueled by surrounding vegetation (mainly shoots and shrubs)," the Press Office of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) reported.
Greek authorities issued a warning via the cell broadcast system due to the heavy smoke, to protect residents near the affected areas.
"Romanian firefighters are responding with two forest fire trucks, a 4,000-liter truck, a 10,000-liter truck, a rapid intervention and command vehicle, and a radio support vehicle. In addition, a 30,000-liter tanker has been mobilized from the operations base to join the teams at the scene," shows the cited source.
French firefighters, deployed in the host country, will also support the teams on site.
"Our colleagues' mission also includes protecting a fuel station surrounded by the fire. Aerial resources are also being deployed at the scene," IGSU specifies, adding that personnel remaining at the operations base are prepared, if necessary, to reinforce the teams on the ground.
